Week One: Chick-Fil-A Kickoff: Auburn vs. USC Preview

David Roy · March 16, 2020

It’s the start of a new season, and our writers have got their picks all ready to go for tonight’s action! Time to break it down!

Tom Pence’s Prediction:

Auburn 28, USC 24

This is a rematch of the National Championship game and should be exciting. Both teams have filled some key spots on their rosters but Auburn’s offense remains intact from last season and should be the difference in this one.

Jimbo’S Prediction:

Auburn 31, USC 35

Mason Winters will be too much for this Auburn secondary who loses two key pieces. USC’s defense will overwhelm Jelkic who throws three interceptions, one to end the game on the final drive, similar to Kingston Fox in the season six National Championship.

OKST’s PREDICTION:

Auburn 31, USC 27

Did someone say Natty rematch? I’ve always loved this tradition of giving the runner up a shot at redemption, but I fear Pack has Auburn running full tilt early this season. Look for USC to make this close, likely ending on a Kingston Fox INT on the would-be game winning drive.

Connor Russell’s Prediction:

Auburn 27, USC 17

I get that these teams just played in the title game, but Auburn is clearly a better team in my eyes. Trust me, no one has played Auburn more than I have in the last two seasons. USC is not the same team as they were last season either, so except this one to be further off than others would expect.

BMillz’ Prediction:

Auburn 24, USC 35

Both teams know that a win in this game changes their whole narrative the rest of the season and that applies to USC especially. The Trojans will come out with fire. They retooled this off-season, adding tight end Sawyer Stern, receiver Tim Cope, and elite safety Peyton Myles. These new additions put USC over the top and give them the win.

NightHawk’s Prediction:

Auburn 27, USC 31

USC has had this game circled on their calendar since it ended last season. Both teams return a bunch of players from that game but I think losing Digger Graves hurts the Tigers a bit in this one and Kingston Fox will lead his Trojans into battle with a chip on their shoulder. Should be some fireworks in this one, but give me the Trojans.

HORNSNATION’S PREDICTION:

Auburn 34, USC 17

In the National Championship rematch, Auburn bests USC again thanks to stellar quarterback play from Griffin Jelkic. USC struggles in the Generic Multiple playbook while their defense keeps the game respectful. Pack gets a big win to start out season seven.

DAVID ROY’S PREDICTION:

AUBURN 31, USC 34

USC is coming off a National Championship loss that they’ve had to suffer through the off-season. They’re jumping at the chance for payback, much like Auburn was at the start of last season. While I believe Auburn to be the better team overall, I find it difficult to believe that USC’s thirst for revenge won’t drive them to victory on the legs of halfback Cain Robinson. But it’s going to be close and likely going to overtime. Buckle up.
