Week Two: Alabama vs. USC Preview

David Roy · March 27, 2020

A new edition of Friday Night Lights for the CFSL features a playoff rematch between Alabama and USC. It was a close game then, but we’ll see if our writers think it will be just as close tonight.

Tom Pence’s Predictions:

Alabama 28, USC 34

Alabama looked good against Florida State last week, but USC has a few more weapons on offense and should be able to move the ball against this Alabama defense.

Jimbo’s Predictions:

Alabama 31, USC 28

This will be a game of running. USC’s bread and butter is the option and Bama’s in the ground and pound. Linebacker Tyson Cane Blade is my X-Factor. Watch for multiple forced turnovers that help Bama to roll (tide).

Houston Freeman’s Predictions:

Alabama 34, USC 21

An unofficial non-conference rivalry game between season six expansion teams looks to be something of an unknown. USC looked human but still good against a loaded Auburn team, and Alabama showed the league something entirely different offensively from last season. The edge in this game in my opinion is simply Alabama’s ability to use their offensive weapons and spread the ball around. If nothing else it should be fun to watch USC receiver Ace Winters and Bama tight end Houston Freeman jaw at each other all week.

Connor Russell’s Predictions:

Alabama 27, USC 24

In my personal game of the week, Alabama is going in as a slight underdog against the Big Ten’s finest. While USC got manhandled by Auburn, their team has some great all around talent top to bottom. I still see Alabama getting the win in a close fight.

BMillz’s Predictions:

Alabama 20, USC 38

USC had a rough game last week and I think that forces them to come out with a lot more fire this game. Their defense can cause a lot of problems for Ballion Siege and if he doesn’t get going it can be a very long night for Alabama

NightHawk’s Predictions:

Alabama 31, USC 28

USC did not look like the team that played in the National Title game a season ago as they got hammered by a very good Auburn team in their chance at redemption. Alabama held off Florida State in an impressive opener, led by running back Ferrell Norman. Don’t expect USC to play as poorly as they did in week 1, but I still think they have some things to figure out and Alabama will take advantage early and sneak out another close one.

Hornsnation’s Predictions:

Alabama 38, USC 41

Smacked by Bama? Anyone remember that? Well it was USC doing the smacking last season against the Tide and this game is no different. USC corrects their mistakes from their week one loss and “roll” over the Tide.

Jeff Melinyshyn’s Predictions:

Alabama 34, USC 41

Bama coming off a solid victory over FSU now has to face a USC team that got embarrassed on opening night last week. No easy feat, USC comes out and gets the victory to move to 1-1.

DAVID ROY’S PREDICTIONS:

Alabama 35, USC 38

All due respects to what the Crimson Tide accomplished last week, but I’m banking on the Trojans at home with a chip on their shoulder. They’ve got to be pretty angry about what happened last week, and Alabama had a sluggish start last week. The Trojans will be in a tough fight, they rarely win by a large margin after all, but they should get the job done.

THE VERDICT:

Our writers are on opposite sides of the fence for tonight, but USC does ultimately get the 5-4 advantage. That said, many suspect a field goal will be the deciding factor for tonight’s action.
