There are many takeaways from the first round of the draft. First off, five QBs went in the first round, which is more than many predicted. However, this was a deep and talented QB class. There are still some huge names left on the board after round one, like Michigan’s Windham Carter, Georgia’s Brandon Petty, and Penn State’s JK Matthews.
There were also plenty of trades. There were six trades in the first round. Both the Titans and Packers ended up with multiple first-round picks, while the Saints and Cowboys traded out of the first round.
The Texas Longhorns led all teams in first-round picks with three. Even more impressively, all three came from Texas’ defensive line. Five other teams had two picks in the first (Auburn, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Miami, and Kentucky).
There are a few CFSL teams that had their highest draft pick in school history. North Carolina hasn’t had a first-round draft pick since Cadbury Wellington, Ayden Martinez, Trevor Austin, and Tatiana Hoops were all taken in the Season 18 Pro Draft. Wellington was the 7th overall pick, which was the highest a Tar Heel had ever been taken. This season Kevin Price went first.
West Virginia also set a new record high with Gunner Rice being drafted second. The Mountaineers’ only other first-round pick was WR Cait Graziano who was taken 7th in the Season 20 Draft. Texas A&M has never had a first-round pick before they got two this season. Buck Stackhouse went seventh overall, making him the highest-picked Aggie ever.
Believe it or not, Kentucky has never had a player picked higher than Perry Harrison was at 11. Bear Brown was taken one pick later, making him the second-highest pick in school history. Virginia Tech has never had a first-round pick before. This is less surprising, given that they have only been around for two seasons. But Ahmad Williams is the highest draft pick in Hokie history.
Tennessee also got their first-ever first-round pick. WR Ace Shepard went 18th overall in the first this season.
Lastly, there is still a lot of talent on the board. This includes two GTs in Miami’s Bo Yost and LSU’s Tyr Gunderson. We will see where they are drafted in the later rounds!
