Working on game notes this morning made me think about which teams are the oldest and which are the youngest in the CFSL. So, I decided to sit down and find out.
To determine this went through each team’s roster. I assigned them 1 point for every freshman, 2 for sophomores, and so on. Then I added up the totals and averaged them to see the age of the average player of each team.
This means a team of all seniors would have a score of 4, and a team of all freshmen would have a score of 1. A perfectly balanced team would have a score of 2.5. Here are the results.
Rank (Youngest to Oldest) | Team | Average Age |
1 | Nebraska | 1.43 |
2 | Iowa | 1.72 |
3 | Notre Dame | 2.04 |
3 | Auburn | 2.04 |
5 | Penn State | 2.08 |
6 | Michigan | 2.17 |
7 | Clemson | 2.24 |
8 | Colorado | 2.25 |
9 | Texas | 2.32 |
10 | Tennessee | 2.33 |
11 | Miami | 2.36 |
12 | West Virginia | 2.42 |
13 | North Carolina | 2.48 |
14 | Virginia Tech | 2.52 |
15 | Alabama | 2.56 |
16 | Ohio State | 2.58 |
16 | LSU | 2.58 |
16 | USC | 2.58 |
19 | Florida State | 2.60 |
20 | Oregon | 2.61 |
21 | Georgia | 2.68 |
22 | Florida | 2.75 |
23 | Oklahoma | 2.83 |
24 | Texas A&M | 2.84 |
Unsurprisingly, the two youngest teams are the two new programs. As they advance over the next few seasons, they should move up into the twos.
Big XII rivals Texas A&M and Oklahoma are the two oldest teams. The Aggies have the most seniors of any program with 11. Georgia does have more seniors than Oklahoma, but Oklahoma has far more juniors and fewer freshmen, which is why the Sooners passed them.
If you break it down by conference, this is what it looks like:
Rank | Conference | Average Age |
1 | SEC | 2.49 |
2 | ACC | 2.37 |
3 | Big XII | 2.35 |
4 | Big10 | 2.29 |
It is also not a surprise that the two conferences that are home to the new teams are the two youngest conferences. However, if you took Iowa out of the Big10, they’d move into second place with an average age of 2.40.
If you took Nebraska out of the Big XII, they would become the oldest conference in the league with an average score of 2.53.
