Alright, ladies and gentlemen. We’ve reached Week Five! From blowouts to
shootouts, we’ve seen it all. The competition is tight! This league has produced such a vast
talent pool of players, it has me thinking:
Are there any season records at risk of being broken in the next four weeks?
Now, after doing some research, I see exactly why this league has split up its history into eras.
Comparing today’s stats to what seems to be the Bash Brothers days of the CFSL would be a
little unfair in my opinion.
That being said. I decided to only include stats during the Modern Era (Seasons 20 and on) to
make this list a little more spicy if you will.
So, without further ado, Here are my Top 5 season records (from the Modern Era) most likely to
be broken this season:
#5 Receiving Yards
Current Record:
Timothy Richardson, Michigan, Season 20: 1,297 yards
Top Challenger:
Malachi Cobb, Oklahoma, Currently At: 726 yards
Malachi Cobb averages 145.2 receiving yards per game. If he stays at that pace he will finish the regular season with 1,162 receiving yards. This means Cobb will most likely need a playoff run to break the record. Oklahoma’s odds are great for making the postseason, but they will need to take care of business in the first round for Cobb to seal it.
#4 Sacks
Current Record:
Rand Rockwell, Texas A&M, Season 21: 17 Sacks
Top Challenger:
Myles Andrews, Virginia Tech, Currently At: 8 Sacks
After a couple of transfers, Andrews has found his home at Virginia Tech. The senior has
already matched his season high in sacks and we still have 4 games to play! Will he break the
Modern Era record? Well, he will need to pick up the pace or Virginia Tech needs a deep playoff run. At his current pace, Andrews will finish the season with just short of 13 sacks.
#3 Kick Return Yards
Current Record:
Tyr Anderson, LSU, Season 20: 1,575 yards
Top Challenger:
Hendrix Dodd, Colorado Currently at: 918 yards
Dodd is on pace for 1,469 return yards at the season’s end. If he can ramp up his stellar production or Colorado makes a playoff run, this record could be in trouble.
#2 Tackles For Loss
Current Record:
Brayden Freeman, Michigan Season 20: 26 TFL
Top Challenger:
Jesse Stork, Ohio State, Currently at: 17 TFL
A common theme here: is a vast improvement. Jesse has already matched his season high in
sacks and is only 2 short of his personal best for TFL at the halfway point. On pace to break the
Modern Era record at the end of the regular season.
#1 Rushing Touchdowns
Current Record:
Taylor James, Colorado, Season 21: 16 TDs
Top Challenger:
Bo Yost, Miami, and Himoteo Del Este, Currently at: 8 TDs
It feels like Bo can break for a TD every time he touches the ball. He was 1 shy of the record his
freshman year when he rushed for 15 touchdowns. Del Este is right there with him, only 2 away from tying his career high in a season.
They both need to ramp up the production or go on a deep run to break the record, but there will be opportunities for both to rack up quite a few in the next three weeks.
Good luck with the second half of the season. Let’s break some records!
