Jake James started as a nose tackle for his high school Bethel High School in Hampton, VA as a freshman. Due to his rare size and speed, he had a productive season. Prior to his sophmore year, he was moved to MLB with his team’s senior linebacker leaving for IMG Academy. After a slow start, he came on strong by ending the season with 71 tackles including 8 for a loss. His junior year he recorded his first interception of his career followed by another 4. He finished with 63 tackles on the year due to missing a game with a hamstring injury. During his senior year in his first game, he tore his ACL and was out for the remainder in the season.
During his high school career he also ran track and competed on the wrestling team.
He is related to former player Brum James. They are cousins.
